The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended the ongoing two-day nationwide protest against hardship and rising inflation in the land.

This was announced in a communique issued by the union on Tuesday evening, stating that NLC is giving the Nigerian Government a new ultimatum till March 13, 2024, to fulfil its promises to the union.

The communique added that the decision to suspend the protest halfway was taken at the end of its National Executive Council meeting because the union felt the objectives of the protest were achieved on the first day of the demonstration.

“Consequently, NEC-in-session resolved as follows: to suspend street action for the second day of the Protest having achieved overwhelming success thus attained the key objectives of the 2-day protest on the first day,” the communique partly read.

When contacted for comment, NLC Head of Information, Comrade Benson Upah said the union had scheduled a press conference for noon tomorrow (Wednesday) to address the public on the issues.

NLC members and other concerned citizens on Tuesday protested in major cities across the country.

The protesters went out in large numbers on the streets of Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Delta, and other cities to demand immediate intervention from the Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian Government to ease the hardship faced by citizens.

The protest is also against the government’s alleged failure to implement agreements reached between both parties on October 2, 2023, following the removal of the fuel subsidy.
