Armed herdsmen carried out attacks in Benue, north central Nigeria, resulting in the death of three people, including a soldier from Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) and the injury of another soldier.

The attacks occurred in different communities in Benue state, with casualties reported in Ochumekwu community of Apa LGA and Kwande LGA.

Major General Sunday Igbinomwanhia, the Commander of OPWS, confirmed that OPWS troops engaged the bandits, resulting in the death of three of them and the recovery of weapons.

The injured soldier is receiving treatment at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital.

The attacks led to displacement and casualties among the local population, with reports of farmers being targeted in various communities.

The situation has caused fear and displacement among the affected communities, with calls for intervention from political, religious, and traditional leaders.

Major General Igbinomwanhia mentioned that OPWS troops are conducting clearance operations to address the threat posed by the armed herdsmen in Kwande LGA.

The situation underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region and the need for concerted efforts to protect the affected communities.

Over the last decade, there have been reports of clashes between herdsmen and farmers in Nigeria, resulting in violence and loss of lives.

These conflicts are often attributed to competition over land resources, ethnic and religious differences, and other socio-political factors.

The issue of herdsmen killings in Nigeria has been a significant concern and has led to calls for improved security measures and conflict resolution strategies.
