First Nigeria’s suicide accomplices trial stalled over administrative hitch

Arraignment of six individuals of what may well be Nigeria’s accomplices in a suicide case was stalled on Tuesday on account of court administrative hitch, it has been learnt.

The defendants were accused of aiding the suicide of Mrs. Lilian Omokhuale, the daughter of the CEO of Uyi Technical Ltd, and their case was postponed at the Federal High Court in Benin City, Nigeria, due to administrative reasons.

Journalists arrived early but were informed that the court would not convene as scheduled. The accused individuals are Jessica Iguodala Oghomwen, Akpes Omorodion, Chukwudi Akpotowho, Joy Noren, Vincent Uhunmwangho, and Blessing Jatto.Lilian Omokhuale, aged 40, tragically took her own life on October 7, 2022, in Benin City.

Subsequently, the police investigated the incident and alleged that the six suspects played a role in her suicide. They were arrested and are now facing prosecution at the Federal High Court in Benin City under the jurisdiction of Hon. Justice S. M. Shuaibu.

The case involves charges related to money laundering, concealment of funds’ sources, and operating a specialized banking service without a valid license.

The accused individuals are also facing charges under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022, the Criminal Code Act 2004, and the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act of 2020.
