Nnamdi Kanu: Amnesty International urges FG to respect court ruling

Amnesty International (AI) has welcomed the judgement of the Appeal Court sitting in Abuja, the federal capital territory which acquitted and discharged the troublesome leader of the proscribed Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

The court in a landmark judgement also declared the rendition of the separatist leader from Kenya illegal.

Amnesty International while reacting to the judgement in a statement obtained by News Band said that the outcome of the court ruling indicated that the Nigerian authorities violated Nnamdi Kanu’s right to fair hearing.

The human rights organization however, urged Nigerian government to abide by the court ruling, in compliance with its national and international human rights obligations.

The statement reads, “Amnesty International welcomes the Court of Appeal ruling in Abuja which discharged leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu of the charges against him. The Nigerian authorities must abide by the ruling, in compliance with its national and international human rights obligations.

“It is pertinent to note that the ruling showed that the authorities violated Nnamdi Kanu’s rights to fair hearing. We urge Nigerian authorities to follow due process and to always respect and uphold human rights.”
