The Nigerian Senate has recalled Senator Abdul Ningi, who was suspended for three months in March 2024 over allegations of budget padding and making alleged false claims about the National Assembly’s passage of the 2024 Appropriation Bills.

Senator Ningi, representing Bauchi Central on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was suspended on March 12, 2024, after an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, where he claimed that the National Assembly passed two 2024 Appropriation Bills and alleged that the 2024 budget was padded to the tune of N3.7 trillion.

The Senate’s decision to recall Ningi follows a motion sponsored by Abba Morro, the Senate Minority Leader, and co-sponsored by Olalere Oyewumi, Senator representing Osun West, and Osita Ngwu, the Senator representing Enugu West.

The motion called for the “unconditional recall of Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi” and was unanimously adopted by the Senate.

Morro noted that Ningi has spent over two months outside the precincts of the National Assembly Complex and needs to return to continue with his legislative activities as the Senator representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District.

He also apologized on behalf of Ningi for any harm caused by his actions and stated that the Senate Minority Leadership takes full responsibility for his actions.

Ningi’s suspension had generated controversy, with some lawmakers and political analysts criticizing the Senate’s decision as an attempt to silence him and suppress dissenting voices.

However, with his recall, Ningi is expected to resume his duties as a Senator and continue with his legislative activities.
