President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has made several key appointments, including the replacement of Solomon Arase as the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

According to a statement issued by the Presidential spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, on Monday evening, June 10, 2024, DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd) has been appointed as the new Chairman of the PSC.

The statement also announced the appointment of Chief Onyemuche Nnamani as Secretary and DIG Taiwo Lakanu (Rtd) as Member of the Commission. These appointments are subject to confirmation by the Senate. Additionally, the President has appointed Mr. Mohammed Sheidu as the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) with immediate effect.

Solomon Arase, a former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), was sworn in as the PSC chairman in March 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari after confirmation by the Senate. Arase retired from the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in 2016 after serving as the 18th IGP.

The President expects the new appointees to demonstrate integrity, diligence, and patriotic zeal in their duties, which are crucial to the overall wellbeing of the Nigeria Police and the nation.

This development comes as a surprise to many, as Arase’s tenure as PSC chairman was expected to continue until the expiration of his term. However, the President’s decision to appoint a new chairman and other members to the Commission is seen as a move to reinvigorate the police force and enhance its effectiveness in maintaining law and order in the country.

The appointments are expected to be confirmed by the Senate in the coming days, after which the new appointees will assume their duties. The development is seen as a significant milestone in President Tinubu’s efforts to reform the police force and ensure the safety and security of all Nigerians.
