Court Sentences Police Inspector to Death for Murder

The Delta State High Court sitting in Asaba has sentenced Police Inspector Ubi Ebri to death for the murder of a phone dealer, Onyeka Ibeh.

The court, presided over by Justice C. D. Diai, found the inspector guilty of killing Ibeh on April 5, 2023, during a stop and search exercise along the Ugbolu-Asaba Road.

According to the prosecution, led by Director E.H. Edema from the Ministry of Justice, the inspector was part of a police patrol team that flagged down Ibeh’s vehicle for a search. When Ibeh stopped and waited to be searched, the inspector became infuriated by his decision to drive away, perceived as disobeying their orders. The inspector opened fire on the vehicle, killing Ibeh on the spot. His wife, who was in the front seat, was unharmed.

The incident sparked protests in Asaba, with youths demanding justice for the slain phone dealer. The police inspector’s conviction and sentencing have been hailed as a victory for justice. The prosecution and the deceased’s family have commended the court for delivering justice.

This case highlights the need for accountability within the Nigerian Police Force and serves as a deterrent to officers who may engage in similar conduct. The sentencing demonstrates the commitment of the judiciary to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served, even in cases involving law enforcement officials.

In related news, there have been other instances of police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Nigeria, sparking calls for reform and greater accountability within the police force. The Nigerian government has pledged to address these concerns and ensure that officers are held accountable for their actions.
