South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was inaugurated for a second term on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at the Union Buildings in Tshwane, South Africa.

The ceremony was marked by a 21-gun salute, military fly-bys, and a parade of honor by servicemen.

Ramaphosa’s swearing-in follows a tumultuous election last month, in which his party, the African National Congress (ANC), failed to secure a majority for the first time since the end of apartheid in 1994.

The ANC garnered 40% of the vote, while the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) won 21%, and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) secured a significant number of seats in parliament.

Despite the challenges, Ramaphosa emerged victorious in the parliamentary vote, receiving 283 votes to EFF leader Julius Malema’s 44.

The ANC’s reduced majority has raised concerns about potential complications in the future, given the vastly different ideologies of the ANC and DA.

Ramaphosa’s inauguration address focused on addressing South Africa’s pressing issues, including high levels of unemployment, inequality, and violent crime. He pledged to work towards creating a more equitable society and rebuilding the economy.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries from across the continent and globe, including heads of state and international organizations.

The event marked a significant milestone in South Africa’s history, as the country navigates a new era of political uncertainty.

Ramaphosa’s second term is expected to be marked by efforts to revitalize the economy, address social inequalities, and strengthen international relations.

Despite the challenges ahead, the president remains committed to building a better future for all South Africans.
