The Nigerian Army has received two newly acquired Bell UH1 combat helicopters to enhance its operational capabilities in counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency operations.

The helicopters, which arrived at the Nigeria Police Air wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, mark the commencement of the Army’s aviation unit.

President Bola Tinubu approved the acquisition of the initial 12 MD 530F Cayuse Attack helicopters for the actualization of army aviation.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, expressed his delight at the delivery of the two aircraft, stating that the journey to realizing the dream of army aviation had come to reality.

The COAS acknowledged the challenges faced in establishing the aviation wing but expressed gratitude for the support received from other security agencies like the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Navy, and Nigerian Police Force.

He emphasized the importance of the new platforms in enhancing operational successes, particularly in casualty evacuation, reconnaissance, surveillance, and flexibility in providing support to troops in the field.
