Elombah.com is investigating a report that one of Nigeria’s Southwestern neighbours, Benin Republic has invaded some Nigerian territories and seized 16 Nigerian villages.
According to Vanguard, “In their shrewd determination to annex the Nigerian villages, authorities of Benin Republic have gone ahead to construct Gendarmes Office (Police station) in the affected Nigerian communities and also hoist the country flag at the affected Nigeria villages.”
This invasion ignored the boundary delimitation of 1914 between Britain and France which the two countries had respected.
The villages are all in Kwara State of Nigeria in Okuta, a neighboring Baruten Local Government area.
The affected Nigeria villages invaded according to Vanguard, “include Ogomne, Bwin, Gandasunon, Kpuru and Woru Wuren Kparu.
Others are Ajuba,1, Ajuba 2, Saka Yeruman Kparu,Monta, Dotin Kparu,Halidun Kparu, Yakubun Kparu, Sonsi,Gunosani, Alhaji Kparu,Yodo Mankparu and Simen Kparu.”
It is on record that Nigeria has lost bits and pieces of its territory in the not too distant past.
Cameroon had legally taken over Bakassi Peninsula following the International Court of Justice [ICJ] ruling during the administration of former president Olusegun Obasanjo.
Nigeria’s northeastern neighbour, Chad has also shown serious interest in Lake Chad region of Nigeria’s territory.
Presently, Boko Haram is staking claim to vast region in North East Nigeria, and now Benin Republic has invaded Nigeria and occupied 16 towns.
