Obi and Tinubu

Former Labour Party presidential candidate in Nigeria, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and other political detainees.

Obi made this plea while addressing reporters in Onitsha, Anambra State, on Saturday, stressing that the continued detention of Kanu and others is unnecessary and arbitrary.

He emphasized the importance of obeying the law and respecting the rule of law, which is essential for a democratic nation like Nigeria. He also urged the government to engage in dialogue with agitators and work towards finding a peaceful resolution to the ongoing insecurity in the country.

The former governor of Anambra State expressed concern over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, particularly in the South East, and advised the governors of the region to come together to tackle the problem. He suggested that they invite former leaders like himself to share their experiences and chart a way forward.

Obi also spoke on protests, supporting peaceful demonstrations but condemning riots and destruction of government property. He emphasized the need for good leadership, stating that competent leaders will have competent agents.

He also dismissed rumors of joining other politicians to form a mega party, stating that his priority is the welfare of poor Nigerians and finding solutions to the country’s economic problems.”
