At least 21 people were slaughtered during a wedding celebration in central Mali on Monday evening, as the country struggles to contain growing violence by extremist groups.

The attack occurred in the village of Djiguibombo, where residents were gathered for a wedding ceremony.

According to eyewitnesses, the attackers, suspected to be linked to the al-Qaeda-affiliated group JNIM, rode into the village on motorcycles and began killing indiscriminately, with most victims having their throats slit.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but it is the latest in a series of brutal attacks targeting civilians in central and northern Mali.

The region has been plagued by violence since 2012, and despite efforts by the military rulers and international forces, the security situation remains dire.

The attack has sparked outrage and concern, with many calling for increased action to be taken against the extremist groups operating in the region.
