Police officer killed as gunmen attack another check point in Anambra

A police officer have been killed after gunmen attacked a checkpoint beside Nnobi Police Station in Idemili South local government area of Anambra State.

Newsband gathered that the criminal elements stormed the community on Friday and lodged in a house close to the police checkpoint they raided.

An eyewitness recounting the attack said, “The hoodlums invaded the community on Friday, seeking refuge in a house mere feet from the checkpoint. They broke through a wall, taking the residents by surprise, and demanded they open the gate to allow their vehicles inside.

“In a chilling act of intimidation, they confiscated the residents’ mobile phones, locking them in a room and warning them against raising an alarm, defiance would be met with violence.”

Though, this is coming after a similar incident less than three weeks when gunmen ambushed a police checkpoint on Omata-Nnobi Road in Nnewi, resulting in the death of another officer.

Meanwhile, the spokesman of Anambra State police command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu confirmed the unfortunate attack.

He reassured the public that authorities were taking action.

Ikenga said, “Yes, it’s true. One policeman on stop and search duty along that road was killed, and there’s an ongoing operation in the area under the directive of the state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Itam.”

“This exemplifies the ultimate sacrifice made by our security personnel in the line of duty. They were diligently monitoring the area at the checkpoint when the assault occurred. Rest assured, we are responding vigorously to restore safety, and further details will be shared as the situation develops.”
