Tragic Container truck accident claims life, injures five in Lagos

Lagos, Nigeria – March 5, 2025: A devastating accident involving a 40-foot container truck and several vehicles occurred today along the Cele Expressway.

Tragically, this incident claimed one life and injured five others, prompting an immediate response from authorities.

The accident unfolded when the heavily loaded truck experienced brake failure while speeding.

As a result, the containers dislodged and crashed onto nearby vehicles, including five commercial buses and two private cars, causing significant damage and serious injuries.

According to preliminary investigations by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), an innocent pedestrian lost their life in this horrific event.

Furthermore, five individuals sustained various injuries, including a commercial bus driver who suffered multiple fractures.

Emergency responders swiftly transported the injured to the General Hospital in Isolo for urgent care.

In the aftermath, LASTMA officers, alongside personnel from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), executed a coordinated rescue operation.

Their rapid response helped extract victims and restore traffic flow along the congested expressway, while police maintained order during the emergency.

Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family.

He emphasized the importance of regular mechanical checks for articulated vehicles, particularly regarding braking systems.

Additionally, he urged all motorists to adhere to speed limits and traffic laws for public safety.

“The safety of lives on our roads is paramount,” Mr. Bakare-Oki stated. This tragic event highlights the need for routine vehicle maintenance and compliance with traffic regulations.
