A Nigerian male nurse has sparked conversations online after questioning the practice of restricting male nurses from entering labour wards when women are in childbirth. In his remarks, he wondered why male nurses, who undergo the same professional training and acquire the same medical knowledge as their female counterparts, are sometimes prevented from attending to patients in certain hospital wards simply because they are men. He argued that male nurses are equally qualified healthcare professionals and questioned the reasoning behind gender-based restrictions in maternity care. His comments have reignited discussions about gender equality in the nursing profession, patients’ privacy, professional boundaries and the need to balance patient comfort with equal opportunities for healthcare workers. Should qualified male nurses be allowed to work in labour wards, provided patients' privacy and consent are respected?
