Barely one week after AK-47 wielding gunmen attacked St Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu in Anambra State, another set of gunmen on Sunday struck at the Assemblies of God Church located at Oguta Road, Onitsha, in the same Anambra State.

During the latest attack, the gunmen killed one policeman and a civilian.

The previous attack at St Philips Catholic Church, Ozubulu saw the death of at least 13 persons with 27 injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen stopped in front of the Church, but on sighting some policemen attached to the church, opened fire on them.

The policemen abandoned their patrol vehicle and ran away for safety when the firepower became too severe.

The gunmen reportedly moved to the police patrol van and took a gun belonging to the policeman they killed.

Another eyewitness, however, said the Assemblies of God Church was not the primary target of the gunmen.

He claimed that the gunmen were on Okada when they shot the policeman and collected his rifle.

He said that they also shot dead an Okada man while escaping, and the passenger he was carrying was injured.

According to him, they shot the policeman because he was the only one armed among his colleagues.

He said the policemen were providing security while church service was going on at the Assemblies of God Church.

Corroborating the second story, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Mr Garba Umar confirmed the incident to newsmen.

He said the attack was not directed on the church.

He stated: “My men were on patrol near the church when they were attacked by some gunmen. It was not an attack on the church, in the real sense of it”.

The commissioner confirmed that the hoodlums took away a rifle belonging to the slain cop.

Just the day before, the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had, on Saturday, sent the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige and four other to commiserate with the family members of the Ozubulu church massacre.

Osinbajo said the Federal Government would work out modalities on how to secure places of worship in the country.
