BAUCHI, Nigeria — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says its security personnel have successfully foiled an attempted act of vandalism at one of its transmission substations in Bauchi State, recovering a vehicle and several critical power infrastructure components believed to have been used by the suspects.
According to the company, the incident occurred during a routine security patrol when personnel intercepted individuals allegedly attempting to vandalize electricity transmission facilities. The suspects reportedly fled the scene after noticing the presence of security operatives, abandoning their vehicle and equipment.
TCN said security personnel recovered a vehicle believed to have been used by the suspected vandals, along with several tower components and tools intended for removing or damaging critical transmission infrastructure. The recovered items have since been handed over to relevant security agencies as investigations continue.
The company noted that the swift response of its security team prevented what could have resulted in significant damage to the transmission network and widespread disruption of electricity supply to affected communities.
TCN condemned the persistent vandalism of power infrastructure across the country, describing the acts as criminal activities that undermine the stability of Nigeria’s electricity grid, increase maintenance costs and negatively affect economic activities and public welfare.
The company stressed that attacks on transmission facilities not only disrupt power supply but also endanger the lives of workers, nearby residents and the perpetrators themselves due to the high-voltage nature of the installations.
TCN urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or activities around electricity installations to security agencies or the company. It said community participation remains essential in protecting critical national infrastructure from criminal elements.
The company also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening surveillance around transmission facilities through collaboration with security agencies, host communities and other stakeholders to safeguard the national grid.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, while security agencies are working to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attempted vandalism. TCN assured Nigerians that it will continue implementing measures aimed at protecting transmission assets and ensuring a more reliable electricity supply across the country.
