Senate President,  Bukola Saraki on Thursday asked the Inspector General of Police , Ibrahim Idris [pictured] to respect himself by honoring the Senate’s panel investigation on the corruption and gross misconduct leveled against him.

Saraki in his remarks after the conclusion of point of order raised by Senator Francis Alimekhena said that nobody can stop the Senate from investigating the IGP.

He said : ” As the chief law enforcing officer, one will expect that he should know what the law is and he should know that there have been many judgements stating  that such court action  cannot stop the Senate from doing its job.

“I think that he is best advised to follow the law and ensure that he has nothing to hide by  appearing  like anyone else before the committee”.

Earlier,  Senator Alimekhena who had  came through order 43 of the Senate standing rules said though the committee had on Wednesday resolved to reinvite the IG to appear before it on Tuesday unfailingly  but felt it was  right to officially inform the Senate , in view of possible invocation of provisions of section 89(C&D) of the 1999 constitution against the IG later.

“Mr President as widely reported in most of the national dailies today, the Inspector General of Police refused to honour invitation sent to him  for appearance before our committee yesterday on the grounds of being in court but we have written him for unfailing appearance before us on Tuesday since such litigation cannot stop us from performing our legislative functions.

“We are bringing this to the notice of the Senate in view of available constitutoonal provisions that can later be invoked should the IGP refuse again to appear”, he said.

It could be recalled that IGP is expected to appear before the Senate Panel to defend the allegations leveled against him by Senator Isah Misau.
