The Senate has vowed to use legislative means to unravel the diversion of over N634.8 billion meant to fix dilapidated federal roads, into unknown account.
Senate Committee on Federal Road Maintanance Agency (FERMA) has decided to investigate diversion of over N634.8 billion meant to fix dilapidated federal roads across the country.
The chairman of the Committee, Senator Magnus Abe made who made this known during the budget defence of the agency jointly held by both chamber vowed to use legislative means to unravel the diversion of the fund into unknown account.
According to him, when the fuel price was agreed upon, a particular amount was backed the law to be given to FERMA but, the agency only received the money once. Everybody gets his own share from the money but one meant for FERMA is diverted into an unknown account.
The chairman wondered that how could the money meant to maintain Federal roads be diverted into unknown account adding that that there is law directing appropriate agency to remit the money into FERMA but the law is not complied with.
In his words ” The agency has only received the fund once since the law has been made. The funding of federal roads was taken consideration when the fuel price was agreed upon. The money is collected from Nigerians , everybody gets their own shares except FERMA, who is taking the money? We don’t know before now.
” we are going to seek clear mandate to investigate what has happened to the fund, this is not the question of taxation but the money that has been collected that would end in an unknown destination, we will use legislative means to find out how this money is being collected and who collected it. “
