Police investigates the death of a beggar in Niger State

An old man identified to be a beggar, by name Buba, was on Thursday, August 15, 2024, found dead under conditions considered suspicious by the police along the road by BCGA Bridge on Kontagora Zuru road in Kontagora LGA of Niger State.

 Niger Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mr. Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the death of the beggar in a press release.

Mr. Abiodun told news men that the beggar was found lying unconscious when the police arrived at the scene.

The State Police Command is examining the corpse of the beggar to ascertain cause of his death according to Abiodun.

Eyewitnesses reported that the beggar was originally from Bangi, the headquarters of Magama local Government Area, Niger state.

They also confirmed that he had been spotted at various intersections asking for charity. 

Consequently, Passersby who found the body alerted the police, who quickly arrived at the scene to assess the situation. 

Upon arrival, police found the Buba lying face down along a deserted road and raised concerns about the circumstances leading to his death. 

According to reports, there weren’t visible signs of struggle or violence on the body, but authorities have not out-ruled possibilities.

Police findings on the beggar

 The police spokesman said: “On 14/8/2024 at about 0830 hrs, based on a report at A DivKgora.

” That one beggar aged about 70, whose identity is yet to be known was found lying unconscious at Kwanar-Zuru bridge in Kgora.

“The police operatives attached to A Div Kgora visited the scene.

“The body was examined, and no sign of violence was seen on the body, while the LGA social welfare officials were contacted.

“And the body was moved to general hospital where he was confirmed dead.

“Further examination of the body is ongoing at the hospital to ascertain the cause of the death”.

However, the residents of Kontagora expressed shock and sorrow as they noted that the man was familiar in the area.

The local police are currently investigating the case due to the discovery, and also treating the death as suspicious.

The police have said to commence investigations to ascertain the exact cause of the death of the beggar.

The incident sparked discussions within the community about the vulnerability of the elderly, especially those without family or social support. 

Local leaders are calling for increased attention to the welfare of senior citizens.

They emphasized the need for stronger community bonds and better care for those in need.

However, as investigation continues, residents of Kontagora and Bangi are left to mourn the tragic loss.

They say they hope for answers and reflecting on the plight of the elderly in their society.
