A report from the U.S. Embassy in Ankara said military-appearing jets had been flying low over the city and over Istanbul for about an hour.

The Turkish military has announced that it’s taken control of the country in what is widely seen as a coup against the government of President Erdogan.
But President Erdogan has promised to punish those behind the uprising in a telephone message to journalists and promised to return to the capital Ankara.
Civilians are being informed that martial law has been imposed and that they should return to their homes. It is unclear at this point which military units are participating in the coup attempt and which are responding to it. Military units have taken control of Ataturk international airport in Istanbul, and communication channels including Twitter, Facebook and the state television channel have been blocked
