Eight killed as plane crashes at US Air Force site in Alaska

A plane crash at a remote United States Air Force facility in Alaska has killed eight people, the US military has confirmed.

According to Reuters reports, the civilian-contracted aircraft crashed at the airport of a long-range radar site in Cape Newenham, located in southwestern Alaska, according to the Alaskan Command.

Rescuers who reached the crash site confirmed that there were no survivors.

The military has not released the identities or nationalities of those on board.

It also did not immediately disclose what the victims were doing at the radar facility, which monitors aircraft operating in Alaskan airspace.

An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway, the Alaskan Command said.

A spokesperson said the identities of the victims would be released after their families had been notified.

Alaskan Command chief, Lieutenant General Robert Davis, described the incident as a devastating loss for the military and the communities it serves.

“This is a devastating loss for our military family and the communities we serve,” Davis said.

He added that the victims were “dedicated professionals” carrying out an important mission in a challenging environment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
