INEC to issue ID cards to party agents, assures transparent polls

INEC National Commissioner said that it would issue identity cards to agents of various political parties contesting in the guber election in Edo State

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), National Commissioner in charge of South-South, Dr Mustapha Lecky has said that it would issue identity cards to agents of the various political parties contesting in Sept. 28 governorship election in Edo State.

Dr. Lecky disclosed this in an interview with newsmen in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo, on Thursday.

He emphasized that only party agents with the INEC identification card issued by the commission, would be allowed at polling stations to supervise the election.

“We are going to issue identification cards to party agents that will be at the various polling units. 

“This ID card will have the picture of the party agents printed on it and if you don’t have this card you will not be allowed at the polling unit. 

“This idea is to identify those who will be at the polling units across the state and to ensure transparent process,” Lecky said. 

The INEC commissioner explained that the postponement of the election was in the best interest of the people.

He added that the commission would never put the lives of its officials and the electorates at risk. 

Also, he assured that, the election would be free, fair, credible and transparent. 

“INEC is fully ready to conduct credible and transparent election in Edo. 

“Though it will cost us more in the training of our staff, but we assure that INEC will deliver credible election come Sept. 28,” he said.  

It should be noted that the Edo election had earlier suffered, a postponement, due to alleged security implications.
