2027: CARDINAL ONAIYEKAN DRAGS SOLUDO, TINUBU, INEC OVER FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS

Catholic Cardinal John Onaiyekan has raised concerns over the state of Nigeria’s political space ahead of the 2027 general elections, speaking on the need for elections to be conducted freely, fairly and transparently.

Speaking in Enugu, Cardinal Onaiyekan said it is not the responsibility of Governor Chukwuma Soludo or other governors to tell citizens who to vote for, stressing that every governor has only one vote like every other eligible voter.

He also questioned the quality of elections Nigeria has conducted so far, saying, in his words, that the elections “have not been serious.” According to him, conducting credible elections should not be treated as an impossible task, insisting that elections are “not rocket science” and can be conducted freely and fairly.

Cardinal Onaiyekan also referred to the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), noting that its Chairman, Joash Amupitan, had said he would “surprise us.”

The Catholic cleric further revealed that when bishops visited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, they raised concerns about what he described as a shaking political space and the threat to free and fair elections.

His comments come as political parties, candidates, civil society groups and voters begin to focus increasingly on the 2027 elections, with questions surrounding electoral credibility, the independence and performance of INEC, the role of political leaders and governors, and the protection of voters’ choices remaining major issues in Nigeria’s political conversation.

“IS THIS REALLY MBAISE?” — EX-NNAMDI KANU LAWYER-TURNED-POLITICIAN WALKS THROUGH ‘FOREST’ COMMUNITY

Former lawyer to Nnamdi Kanu and NDC candidate for the House of Representatives, Chief Barr. Maxwell C. Opara, has shared a striking video from his campaign tour of Onicha-Nwafor Community in Ezinihitte Mbaise, Imo State.

In a Facebook post on Friday, September 25, 2026, Opara said his “heart bled” after witnessing what he described as the harsh living conditions in the community.

The video shows the NDC House of Representatives candidate walking through a thick, overgrown area, accompanied by other men, with a vehicle following behind.

According to Opara, the community, comprising Eziama and Omukwu, is facing severe gully erosion and lacks a proper access road. He also claimed that the only secondary school and primary school in the community have been overtaken by weeds and are no longer accessible.

Opara said he was deeply moved by what he witnessed, describing the experience as a mixture of “tears and joy” — tears over the condition of the people and joy over their resilience and reception during his campaign visit.

He said the experience reinforced his reason for entering politics: “to give a voice to the voiceless and bring development to the forgotten.”
