NCC flogged over proposed tariff hike, as Senate summons minister

Senate on Wednesday summoned Minister of Communication, Adebayo Shitu and Nigerian Communication Commission, NCC over planned data tariff hike that is scheduled to start by December 1.

The Upper chamber also asked the NCC to immediately halt the proposed data tariff hike.

The decision of Red chamber was as a result of matter urgent national importance raised by Deputy leader of the Senate,‎ Bala N’ Allah, who condemned the proposed data tariff hike by the Telecommunication operators in the country.

He asked the NCC to halt the increase immediately. 

In his contribution to matter on the floor of the Senate, Senator Solomon Adeola who is also the Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Communication expressed dissatisfaction with the proposal by the NCC to increase tariff data in the country starting from December 1.

According to him, “we are up to the task. And I can assure the Senate that we will swing into action immediately. 

“We will invite all the necessary agencies that are involved in this policy that is unholy and unfriendly and get back to the Senate unfailingly on Tuesday.‎”

In his remark, Senate President Bukola Saraki frown against the planned Tariff Data hike by operators blaming NCC for his failure to carry out enough consultation before announcing the policy.

Saraki also directed its Committee on Communication to probe non-compliance with laid down regulation by operators.  ‎
