(DDM) – The Nigerian Army has confirmed a minor explosion and fire outbreak at Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Thursday morning, August 14, 2025.

DDM gathered that the incident occurred in the early hours of the day within the premises of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron.

According to a statement from the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, the situation was swiftly brought under control.

Anele explained that the explosion was localized and took place in one of the storage buildings inside the barracks.

The incident reportedly caused a limited fire outbreak that threatened to spread before quick intervention by military and civilian emergency responders.

Troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment worked in close coordination with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service to contain the flames.

Their combined efforts ensured that the fire did not extend beyond the affected storage area.

Anele confirmed that there were no casualties in the incident.

No injuries were recorded, and no lives were lost during the emergency response.

The army spokesperson added that structural damage was restricted to the specific building where the explosion occurred and to some stored materials housed inside.

A full assessment is currently underway to determine the extent of material loss.

Authorities have urged residents of Ilese and nearby communities to remain calm and continue with their normal activities.

The Nigerian Army assured the public that there is no ongoing threat from the incident.

Anele further disclosed that a thorough investigation has commenced to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion.

The army is also working to ensure that measures are put in place to prevent a recurrence.

She reaffirmed the army’s commitment to the safety and security of both its personnel and civilians living in surrounding communities.

Security experts say the location of the incident within a counter-improvised explosive device squadron suggests that stored military materials could have triggered the explosion.

They note that the swift containment of the fire likely prevented a more serious disaster.

This latest incident comes at a time when military facilities across the country are on heightened alert due to security concerns.

DDM notes that past cases of accidental explosions at military depots have sometimes resulted in significant loss of life and property.

However, in this case, quick action by the Nigerian Army and local fire services avoided a potential tragedy.
