YENAGOA, NIGERIA — A tragic boat accident has claimed the lives of three children along the Ikeinghenbiri–Ikebiri creek in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, raising fresh concerns over waterway safety in the region.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at approximately 1:00 a.m., when a wooden passenger boat travelling from Azuzuama to Yenagoa capsized mid-journey under unclear circumstances.
Authorities confirmed that the victims, aged between six and 15, were among passengers onboard the vessel at the time of the accident. Reports indicate that the children were asleep when the boat overturned, leaving them unable to escape.
Emergency response efforts led to the recovery of their bodies from the creek, bringing the tragic incident to a grim conclusion. The remains were subsequently transported back to Azuzuama, where burial arrangements were carried out by grieving families.
Although the exact cause of the accident has not been officially determined, preliminary findings suggest that overloading and possible failure of the boat’s water evacuation system may have contributed to the mishap.
Local sources stated that the vessel may have taken in excess water during the journey, eventually leading to loss of balance and capsizing in the dark conditions of the early morning.
The tragedy has once again highlighted persistent safety challenges affecting water transportation in Bayelsa State, where many communities rely heavily on boats as a primary means of movement.
Stakeholders and residents have renewed calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations, including mandatory use of life jackets, regular inspection of vessels, and limits on passenger capacity.
Experts warn that recurring boat accidents in riverine areas are often linked to negligence, poor maintenance, and lack of regulatory oversight, stressing the need for urgent government intervention.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to assess compliance with safety standards and determine measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident has left the affected communities in mourning, while reinforcing the urgent need to improve water transport safety to protect lives across Nigeria’s coastal and riverine regions.
