Aisha Yesufu blasts Okonjo-Iweala, says Tinubu only stabilising his own mess

(DDM) – Activist Aisha Yesufu has faulted World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, over her comments praising President Bola Tinubu for stabilising Nigeria’s economy.

Okonjo-Iweala had recently commended Tinubu for steps she claimed were restoring economic stability in Africa’s largest economy.

DDM gathered that her remarks triggered backlash from critics who insist the president is responsible for the current hardship Nigerians face.

In a post on X, Yesufu asked why Nigerians should reward Tinubu for “fixing” an economy she said he personally destabilised.

She argued that the country has not yet returned to the level it was before Tinubu took office, stressing that any talk of stability is misplaced.

According to her, giving Tinubu credit for stabilising an economy he wrecked is misleading.

She insisted that such commendation would only be justified if Tinubu had inherited a worse situation than he met.

Yesufu maintained that Nigeria’s economic state remains dire, with inflation, unemployment, and devaluation still hitting citizens hard.

She warned that praising the president for merely slowing the decline is an insult to the millions struggling to survive.

She said the claim of stability amounts to Nigerians being asked to “clap for someone who created a crisis and then managed to manage it poorly.”

Her criticism highlights a wider debate in Nigeria’s political and economic space.

While Tinubu’s supporters argue that reforms like fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate unification are difficult but necessary, many ordinary citizens feel the policies have unleashed unbearable suffering.

Observers note that Okonjo-Iweala’s global standing makes her remarks influential, but activists like Yesufu believe international voices should reflect the reality Nigerians live daily.

As the debate deepens, DDM notes that the tension reflects growing public frustration with narratives that paint the government’s economic management in a positive light despite worsening living conditions.
