Iran has executed a man accused of playing a key role in unrest earlier this year, according to reports from Mizan, the judiciary’s official outlet.
The man, identified as Amirali Mirjafari, was put to death on Tuesday, April 21, after being convicted of setting fire to a mosque in Tehran during the January protests.
Authorities also claimed he was connected to a network linked to Israel’s intelligence agency.
State media said Mirjafari had been involved in what it described as anti-security activities, including the arson attack on the Qolhak Mosque.
His death sentence had already been upheld by the Supreme Court before it was carried out early in the day.
The execution comes in the aftermath of widespread protests that swept across Iran earlier this year some of the largest the country has seen in recent times.
The demonstrations were met with a heavy crackdown by authorities, drawing international attention and criticism.
Iran has not released further details about the case beyond the official statements.
