A Magistrate Court in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has ordered that Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) tests be carried out on Liam Aloba, the son of the late Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

Delivering the ruling on Tuesday, September 2, Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga directed that the tests must be conducted in two separate accredited hospitals one within Nigeria and another outside the country.

The decision follows an application filed by Mohbad’s father, Mr. Joseph Aloba, who sought clarity over the paternity of his grandson.

Application and Court Proceedings

In his application, brought under Order 8 Rules 1 & 8 of the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) 2012, Mr. Aloba asked the court to order DNA tests using tissue, hair, or other biological samples from Mohbad’s remains currently held at the Military Hospital, Yaba.

He argued that doubts about Liam’s paternity needed to be resolved to protect both the child’s welfare and the respondent’s obligations.

Mohbad’s widow, Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, was listed as the respondent in the case.

Representing Mr. Aloba in court was Augustine Adegbemi from the law firm of Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN) & Co., while Kabir Akingbolu appeared for Omowunmi.

Both sides agreed to the DNA request, and with no opposition, the magistrate granted the order.

Court Directives

The court ordered the following:

1. Two separate DNA tests must be conducted one in Nigeria and another abroad at accredited and recognized medical facilities.

2. Both parties or their chosen representatives must be physically present during the collection of samples.

The matter was adjourned until November 11, 2025, for further proceedings.

Background

Mohbad, who died under controversial circumstances in September 2023, was a fast-rising Nigerian artist whose death sparked widespread public outrage and calls for justice.

His father has consistently demanded a DNA test for Liam, citing public speculation over the boy’s paternity.

The latest court ruling marks a major step in resolving the dispute, as the DNA test results will play a crucial role in determining legal responsibilities for the child’s welfare and inheritance.
