Soldiers from the 22 Armoured Brigade, under Operation Park Strike V, collaborated with Park Rangers to conduct a successful ambush against armed bandits in Kainji Lake National Park, Niger State.
According to Capt. Stephen Nwankwo, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the brigade, the operation was launched on Thursday after security forces received intelligence about bandit movements in the park’s Zugurma sector.
The troops set up an ambush at the Tungan Talle crossing around 1:15 a.m. and engaged the bandits in a fierce gunfight.
Nwankwo stated: “The troops’ superior firepower overpowered the criminals, leading to an unconfirmed number of insurgents neutralised, while others sustained gunshot injuries.”
During the operation, three AK-47 rifles and four motorcycles were seized.
However, one Park Ranger sustained gunshot wounds but received prompt medical attention and was stabilized.
Brig.-Gen. Ezra Barkins, Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, commended the soldiers for their bravery and professionalism.
He urged the troops to maintain the momentum until all criminal elements are cleared from the area, emphasizing the need for sustained operations to ensure the region’s security.
