The Police Service Commission (PSC) has announced the abolition of special promotions in the Nigeria Police Force, effective immediately.

The commission’s chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu, made the announcement while receiving a delegation from the Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria.

Argungu stated that promotions will now be based on merit, with officers required to pass prescribed examinations and meet basic requirements.

He emphasized that seniority is no longer relevant in modern policing and that officers who fail promotion examinations three times will be retired at their current rank for incompetence.

The PSC chairman also noted that accelerated promotions will still be available for officers who demonstrate exceptional performance, but this will be done with caution to prevent abuse.

Argungu, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, expressed his commitment to upholding the integrity of the Nigeria Police Force and the PSC, stating, “A policeman is like Caesar’s wife and should be above suspicion. It is country first.”

The Association of Retired Police Officers of Nigeria had visited the PSC to pledge their support and loyalty to the commission’s leadership.
