FG Reaffirms Commitment To Religious Freedom, Dismisses U.S. Report On Nigeria

The Federal Government has firmly rejected a recent U.S. report on religious freedom in Nigeria, describing it as a misrepresentation of the country’s realities.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the statement was issued by Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, who emphasized that Nigeria’s current security challenges are part of a broader regional fight against violent extremism rather than religious persecution.

According to Ebienfa, the instability affecting parts of the country is being fueled by special interests across West Africa and the Sahel, where terrorist groups exploit ethnic and economic divisions for political gain.

The government, he said, remains deeply committed to protecting every Nigerian citizen, irrespective of faith or belief system, reaffirming that freedom of religion is enshrined in the nation’s constitution.

The statement also praised the efforts of Nigeria’s Armed Forces and security agencies for their sacrifices in combating insurgency, banditry, and communal violence, noting that their resilience continues to uphold national unity.

It further expressed solidarity with victims of violence, assuring that the government will continue to support communities affected by insecurity while promoting reconciliation and peacebuilding initiatives.

Ebienfa described Nigeria as a “diverse and God-fearing nation” whose people have coexisted for centuries despite cultural and religious differences.

He stressed that Nigeria, like the United States, has no option but to celebrate diversity, which remains the country’s greatest strength and source of unity.

While dismissing aspects of the U.S. report that imply targeted religious discrimination, the Ministry maintained that Nigeria’s democracy thrives on pluralism, tolerance, and mutual respect among all groups.

Despite the disagreement over the report’s conclusions, the Federal Government reaffirmed Nigeria’s strategic partnership with the United States, acknowledging both nations’ shared commitment to peace, freedom, and democratic governance.

Ebienfa noted that Nigeria values its international allies but insists that foreign assessments must reflect the complex realities of the region, particularly the transnational nature of terrorism that affects many West African countries.

He called for constructive engagement rather than sensational reports, emphasizing that collaboration between nations is crucial in addressing global threats such as violent extremism, poverty, and human rights violations.

The statement concluded by reaffirming that Nigeria remains open to dialogue and partnership with the U.S. and other global stakeholders in pursuit of a just, peaceful, and inclusive world.
