Trump, Obi Comparison: Tinubu’s Media Adviser, Ajayi, must bridle his tongue!

Obi, Trump

A recent statement by Temitope Ajayi, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, has sparked controversy and raised concerns about Nigeria’s neutrality in the upcoming US elections.

Ajayi compared Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, to Donald Trump, claiming they share similarities in “using negative language to describe their countries.”

This comparison, I consider, is misleading, unnecessary and an insult to common sense.

I question the motive behind Ajayi’s statement, wondering if it is the Nigerian presidency’s endorsement of the Kamala Harris’ campaign, or Ajayi’s lack of understanding of the sensitive office he is currently occupying.

As the US elections approach, the Nigerian presidency must maintain a neutral stance to avoid straining its relationship with the US, regardless of who wins.

Actors in the Nigerian presidency like Ajayi must understand the implications of meddling into the internal affairs of the United States.

A Trump victory could lead to diplomatic tensions if the Nigerian Presidency is perceived as having lampooned his candidacy, or actively supporting Harris.

The Nigerian Presidency must be cautious in its public statements to avoid misinterpretation and potential diplomatic fallout.

Nigeria’s interests lie in maintaining good relations with the US, and it cannot afford a standoff, especially during these uncertain times of economic hardship, worsening insecurity and political instability.

Bridle thy tongue, O’ Ajayi!
