(DDM) – The Abia State Government, under the leadership of Governor Okezie Ikpeazu Otti, has officially transformed the futures of 150 top polytechnic graduates by awarding each a grant of N1 million.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the beneficiaries were the best Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba (OOPA) from the 2022 to 2024 academic sessions.

The Rector of OOPA, Christopher Okoro, presented the cheques to the students on behalf of Governor Otti on Tuesday, emphasizing that the empowerment initiative is aimed at turning graduates into full-fledged entrepreneurs capable of driving innovation and creating employment.

Okoro explained that the scheme is a fulfilment of a promise Governor Otti made to the polytechnic two years ago.
He revealed that the selection process involved rigorous evaluation, where HND graduates submitted business proposals that were vetted by a consultant. Only those meeting the criteria were shortlisted as successful beneficiaries.

The rector stressed that the funds are grants, not loans, designed to enable the recipients to invest in viable business ventures and subsequently give back to society, improving economic conditions and uplifting other lives.

Okoro added that Governor Otti also instructed the institution to collaborate with established entrepreneurs who would mentor the graduates and provide guidance to ensure the money is utilised efficiently and effectively.
He noted that some of the beneficiaries had already embarked on their National Youth Service, but reassured that they could claim their cheques upon return to the state for the intended entrepreneurial purpose.

The polytechnic has not only secured accreditation for its existing 33 courses but also introduced 17 new accredited programs, including Legal Studies and Igbo Language, tailored to meet student and societal needs.

Okoro further showcased the institution’s practical contributions to the state, noting that students are now producing iron doors for primary and secondary schools and manufacturing refuse buckets for statewide sanitation projects. These activities have bolstered students’ work ethic while generating revenue and providing services essential to Abia State.

In conclusion, Okoro praised Governor Otti as a visionary leader who has positively transformed OOPA, acknowledging the media for highlighting challenges that have guided institutional improvements.

The initiative is expected to significantly empower graduates, stimulate local entrepreneurship, and support economic growth, making it one of Abia State’s landmark educational and economic programs.
