Labour Party Congress Outcome Sparks Fresh Debate Over Abure’s Internal Democracy Claims

(DDM) The National Chairman of the Labour Party, LP, Julius Abure, has praised the outcome of the party’s nationwide congresses, describing them as a clear demonstration of internal democracy and transparent leadership selection.

DDM gathered that the congresses, held across 35 states of the federation, produced new executives at various levels, marking what Abure described as one of the smoothest and most credible internal processes in the party’s recent history.

Abure noted that the Labour Party had not received a single negative report since the exercise began on Tuesday.

He attributed this unusual stability to improved coordination, strict adherence to congress guidelines and the commitment of party members to respecting democratic procedures.

The LP chairman explained that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and security agencies monitored the process, with many commending the transparency, orderliness and adherence to statutory regulations observed across the states.

According to Abure, the congress also served as a practical test for several internal reforms introduced under his leadership,

, reforms designed to eliminate imposition of candidates, expand grassroots participation and ensure that no individual becomes more powerful than the party itself.

He stressed that the Labour Party was now institutionalising a system where the collective will of members prevails at all levels of decision-making.

He added that the successful conduct of the congresses was evidence of the party’s expanding organisational capacity and internal stability.

DDM background checks indicate that internal democracy has remained a contentious issue within the Labour Party since the 2023 general elections.

The party had battled repeated allegations of candidate imposition, parallel congresses, factional leadership struggles and tensions between state chapters and the national office.

Political analysts believe that the just-concluded congresses may help rebuild trust among members, many of whom have consistently demanded transparency and autonomy in local party administration.

However, not all states participated in the exercise.

Abure confirmed that the Labour Party barred Abia State from the congresses after some individuals allegedly secured a court injunction to obstruct the process.

He said the party, being law-abiding, chose to respect the order but had instructed its legal team to seek its vacation to enable Abia to conduct its congress as soon as possible.

Abure further assured party supporters that the Labour Party was now better positioned for the 2027 general election, insisting that the reforms had helped the organisation move beyond previous internal crises.

He called on all Labour Party members nationwide to work cooperatively with the newly elected executives, strengthen grassroots mobilisation structures and build a more formidable platform ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Stakeholders argue that if the party sustains this renewed commitment to transparency and organisational discipline, it could significantly reshape its national outlook and reinforce its relevance in Nigeria’s increasingly competitive political landscape.

For now, the conclusion of the nationwide congresses signals a major stride for the Labour Party as it continues internal reforms, prepares for upcoming electoral battles and works toward rebuilding unity among its diverse supporters.
