Residents of several communities in Kwara State have begun fleeing their homes after suspected terrorists circulated warning letters threatening imminent attacks.
Reports indicate that within the past week, letters were delivered to multiple communities, including Ira, Inaja, and Aho in Oyun Local Government Area, as well as Dunshigogo in Kaiama LGA.
The threats follow the February 3 attack on Woro town that reportedly left more than 170 people dead and dozens abducted.
Fear spreads after threat letters
A letter discovered Thursday in Ira warned residents to prepare for an attack, claiming the group had gathered intelligence on the community. Although the authenticity of the message has not been verified, its circulation triggered widespread panic.
Local sources said the letter was dropped at a motorcycle park near the central mosque and later taken to the palace of the traditional ruler, who alerted security agencies.
Residents of the affected communities have since begun relocating to safer areas, fearing a repeat of recent violence.
Security presence intensified
Security agencies, including the police, DSS, soldiers, and civil defence personnel, have increased patrols across the threatened communities. A military source confirmed that the Nigerian Army’s Forward Operating Base in nearby Ilemona has heightened surveillance and operational readiness.
The spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command said intelligence units are investigating the origin and credibility of the letter while urging residents to provide useful information.
Traditional rulers raise alarm
The Oninaja of Inaja, Oba Wahab Oyetoro, said the threats heightened tension and forced some residents to flee to nearby towns such as Offa.
Community leaders reported that schools and businesses shut down, while farmers stayed away from their fields amid fears of attack.
Calls for urgent intervention
Community representatives have appealed to the state government for urgent intervention and increased security presence. Vigilante groups have also intensified patrols in surrounding forests.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation and prompt reporting of suspicious activities.
Despite reassurances, fear continues to grip the affected communities as residents await further security developments.
