At least 14 people have died after a boat conveying wedding guests capsized in Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The incident occurred at Gumbi village shortly after passengers had escorted a bride to her husband’s home in Gwarzo village.
The celebrants were returning when the overloaded boat reportedly overturned, throwing more than 100 passengers into the water.
Casualties and victims
Fourteen people including 13 women and one child were confirmed dead in the accident.
Survivors were rescued by local residents and emergency responders.
Government reaction
Governor Nasir Idris attended the funeral prayers for the victims and extended condolences to the bereaved families and the people of the emirate.
Represented by Yauri Local Government Chairman Abubakar Shu’aibu, the governor urged the community to accept the tragedy with faith.
“Nothing happens without the knowledge of our Creator… God does what He wants at the time He wants,” he said while praying for the repose of the deceased.
All the victims were buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about water transport safety and overcrowding in riverine communities across Kebbi State.
