Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Mohammed Kasim has won the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship, polling 22,165 votes, defeating APC’s Yahaya Shehu with 17,788 votes.
The election was peaceful and smooth, according to INEC Returning Officer Philip Akpen.
Though, Mr Kasim’s manifesto during his campaign focused on community welfare, women’s empowerment, improved healthcare services, and enhanced education opportunities for children.
INEC conducted the local elections across the six council areas of the FCT, including Gwagwalada, on Saturday.
The rest are the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Kwali, Abaji and Kuje.
The elections were in two categories – the chairmanship and councillorship.
The win is significant for PDP amid national leadership challenges and defections to APC.
The outcome may indicate APC’s dominance hasn’t strongly impacted local areas.
