(DDM) – Troops operating under Operation Whirl Stroke say they killed suspected terrorists and recovered dozens of SIM cards during a raid in Benue State, Nigeria, highlighting ongoing security challenges in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.

The operation, carried out by soldiers of the Nigerian Army, also led to the recovery of weapons and other items believed to have been used by the suspects.

What happened during the raid

According to military sources, the raid targeted a suspected hideout used by armed criminals believed to be operating in parts of Benue State.

Troops reportedly engaged the suspects during the operation, leading to a confrontation in which suspected terrorists were killed.

Security forces also recovered an AK-47 rifle, dozens of SIM cards, and several ATM cards believed to belong to victims or associates of the suspects.

Officials said the recovery of communication devices could help investigators trace the network of individuals involved in the criminal activities.

Why the SIM cards matter

The discovery of about 82 SIM cards has raised questions about how the suspects communicated and coordinated their activities.

Security analysts say criminal groups sometimes use multiple SIM cards to avoid detection by law enforcement agencies.

Frequent switching of SIM cards can make it more difficult for authorities to track calls, financial transactions, and movement patterns.

Investigators may now analyze the recovered SIM cards and ATM cards to identify possible accomplices or financial links connected to the group.
