Visa applicants in Abuja have been left in uncertainty after the United States Embassy Abuja suspended visa appointments following the evacuation of its staff and their families.
The move came just a day after the U.S. government ordered the withdrawal of non-essential personnel and their dependents from the embassy, citing rising security concerns across Nigeria.
While emergency consular services for American citizens are still available, the embassy made it clear these are strictly by appointment.
In a notice sent to applicants, the embassy confirmed that its Abuja office is no longer processing visa appointments for now and advised affected individuals to keep an eye on their email for updates on rescheduling.
“US Embassy Abuja is closed for visa appointments. Applicants should check their email for details on rescheduled appointments.
Visa operations at US Consulate General Lagos continue. American citizen services are available in emergencies and by appointment,” the statement read.
The embassy also clarified that visa services in Lagos remain ongoing despite the disruption in Abuja, offering some relief to applicants who may be able to reroute their plans.
However, no timeline has been given for when visa operations in Abuja will resume, leaving many applicants in limbo and uncertain about their travel arrangements.
