DELTA STATE – The Federal Government has partnered with a private energy firm to develop a new gas processing plant in Delta State as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s domestic gas supply shortfall.

Officials said the project, developed in collaboration with Southfield Petroleum, is expected to process up to 200 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

They explained that the initiative aims to boost local gas availability for industrial use, power generation, and other critical sectors of the economy.

Energy experts note that Nigeria holds vast natural gas reserves but continues to face supply challenges due to infrastructure gaps, underinvestment, and distribution inefficiencies.

They argue that expanding processing capacity through projects like the Delta plant could help reduce reliance on imported energy products.

The Federal Government emphasized that improving domestic gas supply remains a key component of its broader energy transition strategy.

Officials added that increased gas utilization would support cleaner energy adoption while also enhancing economic productivity.

The partnership with Southfield Petroleum is expected to drive private sector participation in Nigeria’s energy sector, particularly in gas infrastructure development.

Analysts say such collaborations are essential for bridging funding gaps and accelerating project delivery timelines.

They also highlight that improved gas supply could stabilize electricity generation, which remains a major challenge in Nigeria.

The Delta region plays a central role in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry, hosting critical infrastructure and contributing significantly to national revenue.

Observers note that investments in the region often carry both economic and social implications, including job creation and community development.

The new plant is expected to create employment opportunities and stimulate economic activities within host communities.
