(DDM) — A man has been arraigned before a High Court in Lagos over an alleged dispute involving the forceful takeover and damage of church property located along the Gbagada Expressway.
The case centers on land reportedly belonging to Harvesters Church, where the defendant is accused of unlawfully encroaching on the property and causing destruction.
According to court proceedings, the accused allegedly took control of the land without proper legal authorization, leading to tensions between the parties involved.
Prosecutors told the court that the actions of the defendant resulted in significant damage to structures on the property, prompting legal action by the church authorities.
The charges brought against the defendant include unlawful entry, property damage, and acts likely to cause a breach of peace.
Legal representatives for the complainant argued that the matter reflects a growing trend of land disputes in urban areas, particularly in rapidly developing parts of Lagos.
They urged the court to ensure that justice is served and that property rights are protected in accordance with the law.
The defence, however, is expected to present its own arguments as the case progresses, with the court yet to determine the full facts surrounding the dispute.
Observers note that land ownership conflicts remain a persistent issue in Lagos, often involving competing claims, documentation disputes, and alleged encroachments.
Such cases frequently end up in court, where legal interpretation of land titles and agreements becomes central to resolution.
The presiding judge adjourned the case to a later date for further hearing, allowing both parties to prepare their submissions.
The outcome of the trial is expected to provide clarity on the ownership of the disputed property and set a precedent for similar cases.
