Adebayo Adelabu is preparing to step down as Nigeria’s Minister of Power after getting the go-ahead from Bola Tinubu to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
The decision follows a meeting between Adelabu and the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday.
During the meeting, the minister gave a detailed update on his work in the power sector over the past two and a half years.
In a statement released by his media aide, Bolaji Tunji, Adelabu highlighted key efforts made under his leadership — from trying to stabilise electricity generation to improving transmission and pushing reforms aimed at better service delivery across the sector.
One of the major points he presented was the National Integrated Electricity Policy, along with its implementation plan.
The statement also made it clear that Adelabu’s resignation is just a matter of time.
According to Tunji, the timing is deliberate. The minister wants to address some pressing issues in the sector before officially stepping aside — especially challenges like fluctuating power generation, gas supply problems to power plants, ongoing pipeline repairs, and debts owed to gas suppliers.
He is also expected to formally secure final approval from the president before making his exit official.
Once he steps down, Adelabu will shift his full focus to the Oyo State governorship race.
