LAGOS, NIGERIA — More than 11,000 Nigerians have applied for an opportunity to sail on a Nigerian Navy warship as part of activities marking the service’s annual celebration aimed at strengthening public engagement.

The disclosure was made on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at approximately 1:30 p.m., during a media briefing held at the Nigerian Navy base in Lagos, where officials provided updates on preparations for the event.

According to a Navy spokesperson, the overwhelming number of applications reflects growing public interest in the armed forces and a desire among citizens to better understand naval operations and maritime security responsibilities.

The initiative, which forms part of the Navy’s outreach programme, is designed to give selected civilians firsthand experience of life onboard a warship, including exposure to basic naval routines, safety procedures, and operational demonstrations.

Officials explained that due to limited capacity, only a small number of applicants will eventually be selected to participate in the exercise. The selection process, they said, will be conducted transparently, with priority given to applicants who meet specified criteria.

The annual event is intended to promote civil-military relations by bridging the gap between the Navy and the public. It also serves as an educational platform to showcase the role of the Navy in protecting Nigeria’s territorial waters and securing maritime trade routes.

Participants selected for the voyage are expected to take part in guided tours, safety drills, and interactive sessions with naval personnel, providing insights into the challenges and responsibilities associated with maritime defence.

The Nigerian Navy has in recent years intensified efforts to engage the public through similar initiatives, including open days, school visits, and community outreach programmes.

Security analysts note that such engagements help build trust and foster cooperation between the military and civilians, particularly in areas where community support is essential for effective security operations.
