US Raises Alarm Over Visa Violations by Nigerian Travellers

The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned Nigerian travellers against overstaying their visas, warning that such actions could have wider consequences for others seeking to visit the United States.

In a statement issued on Monday, the mission stressed the importance of obeying U.S. immigration rules, noting that visa overstays by some individuals can limit opportunities for legitimate travellers, including students, business visitors, and families.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the advisory said, urging applicants to respect the conditions attached to their visas throughout their stay.

The mission also raised concerns about visa fraud and misuse of travel documents, describing them as serious violations that undermine the integrity of the system.

Travellers were encouraged to act responsibly and help preserve access for those who follow the rules, as authorities work to maintain fair and orderly travel processes between Nigeria and the United States.

It added that anyone with credible information about visa fraud should report it through official channels, including dedicated consular fraud prevention email addresses in Abuja and Lagos.

Reaffirming its position, the mission said it remains committed to supporting safe, legal, and transparent travel, while ensuring that those who comply with immigration laws are not disadvantaged by the actions of others.
