Iran, US Allow Russian Superyacht Pass Through Blockade Hormuz

A luxury superyacht linked to Russian billionaire Alexey Mordashov has successfully passed through the strategically sensitive Strait of Hormuz, despite tight restrictions on maritime traffic in the region.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the vessel a 465-foot yacht known as Nord made the crossing after undergoing maintenance in Dubai.

The passage took place over the weekend and, notably, drew no objections from either Iran or the United States.

That has raised questions about how the yacht was able to move through one of the world’s most closely monitored shipping lanes at a time when access has been heavily curtailed due to ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The source said the yacht sailed under a Russian flag and followed an approved route in line with international maritime rules.

It was described as a civilian vessel conducting a peaceful transit, with no links to Iranian ports a key factor in avoiding interference.

“Iran did not obstruct the yacht’s movement, as it belongs to a friendly country and posed no threat,” the source said. “The U.S. also did not raise concerns, given its lack of connection to Iran.”

The development comes against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the United States, following weeks of conflict that have disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz a critical artery for global oil and gas supplies.

Before the conflict began in late February, between 125 and 140 vessels passed through the strait each day. That number has since dropped sharply, with only a handful of ships  mostly commercial cargo carriers making the journey daily.

The U.S. has maintained a blockade targeting Iranian-linked shipping, further tightening movement through the region.

As a result, the successful passage of a high-profile private vessel like Nord stands out.

After completing its transit, tracking data shows the yacht has remained near the coast of Oman since Sunday.

The incident also underscores the complex geopolitical dynamics at play. Russia remains a key ally of Iran, and diplomatic contacts between the two countries have continued in recent days.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi recently traveled to Russia for talks with President Vladimir Putin, following earlier engagements with mediators in Pakistan and Oman.

While the yacht’s journey appears to have complied with international law, it highlights the uneven enforcement and evolving realities of maritime movement in a region where tensions remain high and access tightly controlled.
