ZAMFARA STATE — May 2026 — Troops of the Nigerian military have neutralised three suspected terrorists during a targeted security operation in parts of Zamfara State, recovering a cache of arms and ammunition in the process.
The operation, conducted in the North West region, was part of ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks responsible for attacks on rural communities, kidnapping, and armed banditry.
Security sources said the troops acted on credible intelligence that led them to identified hideouts used by the armed group.
During the coordinated raid, the soldiers engaged the suspects in a gun battle, resulting in the killing of three terrorists while others reportedly fled with injuries.
A significant number of weapons, including firearms and ammunition, were recovered from the scene and have since been secured by the military for further investigation.
Officials said the recovered items are believed to have been used in previous attacks on surrounding communities in the state.
The operation is part of intensified military campaigns aimed at restoring peace and security across Zamfara and other parts of the North West affected by armed violence.
Residents in the area have long suffered from attacks linked to bandit groups, leading to displacement, loss of livelihoods, and heightened insecurity.
Military authorities say recent operations have been focused on clearing identified hotspots and disrupting supply chains used by criminal elements.
Security analysts note that sustained pressure on armed groups is gradually weakening their operational capacity in some regions, although challenges remain.
The military has also urged communities to continue providing intelligence that can assist in identifying criminal hideouts and movements.
Officials emphasised that collaboration between civilians and security agencies remains critical in achieving long-term stability in the region.
Local sources reported a temporary calm in the affected areas following the operation, with increased military presence to prevent retaliatory attacks.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to maintaining offensive operations against terrorist and bandit groups across the country.
Security experts say continued coordinated strikes, intelligence sharing, and community engagement will be key to reducing violence in the North West.
Attention now shifts to follow-up operations and efforts to track fleeing suspects believed to have escaped during the encounter.
