The political atmosphere in Gombe State has entered a new phase following the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to clear Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya to contest for the Gombe North Senatorial District seat ahead of the party’s forthcoming primary elections.
The development, which has generated intense political discussions across the North-East region, is widely seen as a strategic move by the ruling party to retain its influence in Gombe State while preparing for the next political transition after the end of Governor Yahaya’s second tenure in office.
Governor Yahaya, who came into office in 2019 under the APC platform and secured re-election in 2023, is constitutionally expected to complete his tenure in 2027. With the latest clearance by the party, attention has now shifted toward his possible move to the National Assembly as one of the most influential political figures from Gombe State.
Party insiders disclosed that the governor’s clearance followed a series of consultations involving APC stakeholders, elders, political allies and grassroots leaders across the state. Sources within the party said the decision reflected growing support for Yahaya’s senatorial ambition among party loyalists who believe his experience in governance and political leadership would strengthen the party’s position at the federal level.
The Gombe North Senatorial District is currently represented by former Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Political analysts have already predicted that the anticipated contest for the district may emerge as one of the most closely watched political battles in the North-East geopolitical zone ahead of the 2027 elections.
Observers note that the senatorial district carries enormous political significance because it covers several key local government areas with strong electoral influence in Gombe State. The district has historically produced influential political leaders and has often remained central to political power negotiations within the state.
Supporters of Governor Yahaya have continued to project his potential Senate ambition as a natural progression in his political career. Several youth groups, women associations and APC support organisations in recent months openly endorsed calls for the governor to seek legislative office after leaving the Government House.
Many of his loyalists argue that his administration has recorded visible achievements in infrastructure development, road construction, healthcare delivery, agriculture and education since assuming office seven years ago. They maintain that his experience at the state level would provide him with the capacity to contribute effectively to national legislation and constituency representation if elected into the Senate.
Political stakeholders within the APC also believe that Yahaya’s senatorial ambition could help preserve unity within the party as conversations intensify over who succeeds him as governor in 2027. Analysts say the governor still commands substantial political influence across the state and may play a decisive role in determining the direction of the APC after the completion of his tenure.
The APC leadership in Gombe State has in recent months defended its internal consultation process and consensus arrangements ahead of future elections. Governor Yahaya himself had earlier stated that the party remained committed to democratic principles while encouraging dialogue among aspirants and stakeholders to avoid unnecessary internal crises.
According to political observers, the latest development may also trigger renewed political realignments within both the APC and opposition parties in Gombe State. Already, several political groups are reportedly intensifying consultations ahead of the party primaries as aspirants position themselves for different elective offices.
The possibility of a direct contest between Governor Yahaya and political forces loyal to former governor Dankwambo is already attracting public attention across the state. Both politicians remain among the most influential figures in Gombe politics and command loyal support bases across different communities.
While APC supporters describe Yahaya’s emergence as a strategic advantage for the party, opposition voices insist that the 2027 elections would still depend largely on grassroots mobilisation, voter confidence and prevailing economic realities within the country.
Political commentators also believe the governor’s entry into the Senate race may reshape succession politics within the APC as various interests compete for control of the party structure ahead of the governorship contest. Some aspirants are already believed to be quietly building alliances in preparation for what may become a highly competitive transition process.
Despite the growing political activities, APC officials in the state have continued to call for unity among members, insisting that the party remains focused on maintaining stability and consolidating its electoral strength in Gombe State.
The forthcoming APC primary election is expected to officially determine the party’s candidate for the Gombe North Senatorial District seat. However, the governor’s clearance by the ruling party has already positioned him as a major figure in the unfolding political calculations ahead of the next general elections.
With political campaigns gradually gathering momentum nationwide, many residents of Gombe State are expected to closely monitor developments within both the APC and the opposition as the race toward 2027 continues to take shape.
