Nigeria’s political landscape witnessed another major development on Friday as former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, officially entered the 2027 presidential race after obtaining the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential nomination and expression of interest forms valued at N90 million.

The development is already generating widespread reactions across the country, with political analysts describing Amaechi’s move as one of the strongest indications yet that the race for the 2027 presidency is gradually taking shape across both ruling and opposition political parties.

The nomination forms were reportedly obtained at the ADC national secretariat in Abuja by a delegation of party stakeholders and political allies loyal to the former minister. The delegation was said to have been led by former Edo State governor, John Odigie-Oyegun, alongside senior members of the party and supporters of Amaechi’s presidential ambition.

Amaechi’s decision to seek the presidency under the ADC platform marks a significant political transition following years of prominence within the All Progressives Congress. The former minister was among the leading aspirants who contested the APC presidential primary ahead of the 2023 general election before eventually losing the ticket.

Political observers believe his latest move reflects the growing wave of political realignments currently taking place ahead of the next election cycle as opposition figures intensify consultations aimed at building stronger political alternatives.

The former Rivers governor remains one of the most influential political figures from southern Nigeria, with decades of experience spanning legislative, executive and national administrative positions. His political career began in the Rivers State House of Assembly where he served as Speaker before emerging governor of Rivers State in 2007.

During his tenure as governor, Amaechi became widely known for large-scale infrastructure projects, reforms in the education sector and urban renewal initiatives across Rivers State. His administration attracted national attention for investments in road construction, model secondary schools, healthcare projects and transportation development.

Following the end of his tenure as governor, Amaechi was appointed Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari. As minister, he supervised several major railway projects including the Abuja Kaduna rail line and the Lagos Ibadan railway corridor, both of which became central infrastructure projects of the Buhari administration.

Supporters of the former minister argue that his experience in governance and public administration places him among the leading figures capable of offering strong leadership at the national level. Many of his allies have also pointed to his political network and long-standing influence within Nigeria’s political system as major advantages ahead of the 2027 elections.

Amaechi’s formal entry into the race is expected to strengthen the visibility of the African Democratic Congress as the party continues efforts to position itself as a major opposition platform ahead of the next general elections.

In recent months, the ADC has increasingly attracted attention from opposition politicians, political strategists and stakeholders seeking alternative political platforms outside the country’s dominant parties. Analysts believe Amaechi’s declaration may encourage further defections and alliances within opposition circles.

Political commentators have also linked the development to ongoing discussions surrounding the formation of broader opposition coalitions capable of challenging the ruling establishment in 2027. There are growing indications that several prominent political actors may eventually align under common political structures as consultations continue nationwide.

Within the ADC, party officials have welcomed Amaechi’s participation, describing it as evidence of increasing public confidence in the party’s national outlook and political future. The party leadership has repeatedly insisted that it remains committed to internal democracy, transparent primaries and inclusive participation ahead of the elections.

However, analysts note that Amaechi may still face strong competition within the party as other aspirants continue to express interest in the ADC presidential ticket. Political discussions within the party are expected to intensify in the coming months as consultations and coalition talks progress.

Across the country, reactions to the development remain mixed. While supporters view Amaechi as an experienced administrator with national reach and political capacity, critics insist that the outcome of the 2027 presidential race will depend heavily on coalition building, public trust, economic realities and voter mobilisation across different regions of the country.

The former minister’s return to the presidential contest has nevertheless added fresh momentum to Nigeria’s evolving political atmosphere as political parties gradually begin preparations for one of the country’s most anticipated elections.

With more declarations expected from both established and emerging political figures in the months ahead, the race toward 2027 is increasingly shaping into a major battle that could redefine alliances, opposition politics and the future direction of Nigeria’s democracy.
